A garage door can weigh well over 100 kilograms and opens thousands of times a year. A little regular care keeps it quiet, safe and reliable — but it is important to know where DIY ends and professional work begins.
What you can safely do yourself
- Wash the door panels with mild detergent a few times a year, especially in coastal suburbs where salt builds up.
- Wipe the tracks clean of dust, cobwebs and grit with a damp cloth.
- Lubricate hinges, rollers and springs lightly with a silicone-based spray — avoid heavy grease in the tracks.
- Test the safety reverse: place a block of timber on the floor under the door and close it. The door should reverse on contact. If it does not, stop using the opener and call a technician.
- Check the manual release cord works so you can open the door in a power outage.
- Listen. New grinding, scraping or banging sounds are early warnings worth acting on.
What to leave to a technician
Torsion and extension springs are under extreme tension and cause serious injuries every year. The same goes for cables, bottom brackets and anything that requires loosening hardware connected to the spring system. Opener repairs involving internal wiring or limit adjustments are also best handled professionally.
How often should a door be serviced?
We recommend a professional service every one to two years for a typical household door, and more often for heavily used or commercial doors. A service includes tension checks, balance testing, fastener tightening, opener force settings and a full safety inspection.
My door is noisy — does it need replacing?
Usually not. Noise is most often worn rollers, dry hinges or loose hardware, all of which are inexpensive to fix during a service.
